NOMADIC STUDIO

“Nomadic Studio, a recent and ongoing project that includes 70 watercolor and drawing sketchbooks, is connected to his early training as an illustrator with the Topps Chewing Gum Company. Like Plains Indian edger art produced during the late 19th - early 20th century that memorialized acts of heroism, considered by Kahlhamer "to be America's first graphic novels," the Nomadic Studio books include a cast of characters who journey through urban and rural America. Kahlhamer says, "The frontier inspires fear, because it's unknown - and that's my world. My world is the unknown. That's what I'm doing, and that’s what I'm painting, joining these real and imaginary worlds.”
