“A sample Kahlhamer lyric from “Center Line” makes that clear: “Day I crossed that center line/the day I died/ Later that night I became a crow/ I ride the winds/ I look below.” Still they’re thornily contemporary: no Johnny Cash song ever referred to pierced tongues and “tattoos from downtown,” twanged like Neil Young, or featured feedback guitar solos that show the deconstructionists influenced of the Velvet Underground of Pavement(a legacy, perhaps, of Kahlhamer’s involvement in N.Y.C>’s Avant-noise scene in the mid-80s). Instead, Kahlhamer’s songs function much like his paintings — as hazy memories shot though with trails of learned experience.”
